Mulberries

Postby Spiritwolf on Tue Oct 16, 2007 11:01 am

:) Does anyone remember this delish and very messy fruit. I remember climbing up our tree as a kid, WOW what fun, but we came down outa that tree soooo messy, you could'nt get the stains out of our clothes. I remember my mum and Nana making stewed mulberries and hot custard, mulberry icecream, Mulberry pies with whipped cream (YUMMMMMM), eat them straight out of the fridge, in milkshakes when we got home from school, Does any one on here have any favourite recipes that you can remember, that you would like to share, I am planning on getting another tree for my backyard, ( MY other one died ) and I know they start with their fruit fairly early, SO LETS BRING BACK THOSE MULBERRIES Yayyyyyyyy, any memeries or ideas anyone would be great.
Thank You from Spiritwolf. 8-)

Yummy! Some of my best memories as a kid are mulberries too. We had a big tree but it was never enough so our neighbour who had 3 huge trees used to let us take all we wanted. We got so messy! Used to pick unripe ones before we left and rub the juice on the stains which helped wash it off.
We would take buckets full home for mum to make mulberry jam and turnovers! I raided her recipe books recently and didn't see those there though. I think you could just take a strawberry jam recipe and use mulberries. I will ask her though when she comes for dinner this week :)

I remember this fruit very well. Jam is the best on some fresh made bread.

Hi,
I've just planted a couple of mulberry trees in my back yard. I too remember them from my childhood, and the mulberry pies my Mum used to cook. This thread called to mind an event that happened years ago when I was teaching primary school. I was well into the first lesson of the morning when two brothers presented themselves about half and hour late. One was a large overweight lad and the other was a small skinny kid. They stood in the doorway and went into a well rehearsed story of why they were late. A couple of chuckles broke out here and there amongst the listening students, and then the whole classroom dissolved into laughter as the faces, hands and clothes of both miscreants were highly stained with mulberries. It was very clear why they were late.
Cheers,
DAn

Hi,

Yes, you remembered me, golden days of my life. I also use to climb on a mango tree and never care about my clothes and small scratches. Please keep sharing this kind of stuff.

I love Mulberries!

It's unfortunate that they are too hard to transport so you can't just go down the street and buy some. It's always the best things that you can't have.

I remember when I was little we used to pick them off a tree at my cousins house. My mum always used to get so furious because we would stash them in our pockets (thinking we were so clever and that she would never find them) only to have them explode everywhere on the drive home. Good times.

I've been looking to buy a plant for myself, but I live in Queensland and am having a hard time tracking one down. Also, I'm not sure if the weather conditions are appropriate for growing it up here, any advice would be greatly appreciated.
