Star Apples ??

Postby Spiritwolf on Tue Oct 16, 2007 10:31 am

:?: Does any one here know anything about "Star Apples", they are an exoctic fruit that grows here in NTH QLD, I have one in my back yard. The tree is a beautiful specimen which grows quite tall, the leaves are dark green on top and a beautiful deep gold underneath. The fruit is a deep purple colour when fully ripe and ready to eat. You cannot eat them green as they are horrible, very latexy ( YUCK ). But you can get a green variety that is ok to eat green. My tree is the purple variety.
The fruit is like a soft jelly when ripe and ready to eat, with dark seeds, it is also a very dark purple colour, nice and sweet, it is great to eat, but I dont really rave over it, Mangoes are much better, so are lychees and strawberries and passionfruit. The problem I am having is what to do with them apart from eating them straight off the tree. I know they maybe good in Sorbets and Icecream, although Ive never tried it, but "WHAT ELSE ", does any one have any ideas, or has anyone heard of them or have them growing in your back yard, if so what do you do with them. I know my Guinea Pigs like them , so do the wild birds, BUT what a waste of an exotic fruit. Please can anyone help me on what else to do with them, they are not very well known or popular that I know of, Any help would be great.
Thanks heaps, Spiritwolf from Townsville. 8-)

Never heard of this tree but it sounds like the green ones are delicious. How do they relate to the regular apple trees you would see in the States?

Star apples are awesome and I know what you mean when you taste a purple one. That is nasty!
